Dr. Carman on Breast Augmentation and Scarring
“If you’re considering breast augmentation, but you have concerns about scarring, then the first step is to come in for a one on one consultation. Dr. Carman will discuss your concerns about scarring in detail during your personal consultation.
Breast augmentation involves surgery, so it’s not possible to completely eliminate scarring from this or any surgery. However, most of my patients find their scarring is very slight and, in many cases, the scars are virtually undetectable.
If this is something that’s concerning you - if you may even be hesitating over a procedure you’d like to pursue - you’re invited to schedule a consultation to discuss this or any other detail of the procedure. All of your questions are welcome.”
Placement of Incisions after Breast Augmentation in Toronto
At Dr. Carman’s Toronto clinic, he may use one of these three common incisions during your breast augmentation:
- Areola (periareolar)
- Breast crease (inframammary incision)
- Underarm (transaxillary)
Considerations about Periareolar incision:
The periareolar incision, once healed, is “hidden in plain sight” along the border of the areola where the skin transitions in color and texture to the surrounding skin on the breast. Women who have little breast tissue will find it difficult to hide a scar in the breast fold and will be good candidates for the periareolar incision. Saline implants are frequently used at this incision site, but Dr. Carman is also able to use a silicone gel implant; the size of your areola and the size of the silicone gel implant will be relevant.
Considerations about Inframammary incision:
If your breasts are full enough to produce a fold beneath, then the inframammary incision can be effectively concealed there. Some patients choose this type of incision. You may choose either saline implants or silicone gel implants when we use this incision site.
Considerations about Transaxillary incision:
If a woman has selected saline breast implants, and does not want any scarring on the breast at all, then the transaxillary incision is a good choice. The scar will fade into a naturally occurring crease in the underarm.
What factors govern what your scars will look like?
These are the variables that can affect the final healing of your surgery scars:
- Quality of incision
- Quality of incision closure
- Treatment of incision after closure
- Smoking
- General health, including pre- and post-surgical nutrition
- Skin quality, age, and genetic factors
Dr. Carman will ask that you do your part to create the minimum scarring possible. He’ll ask you to follow all our pre- and post-surgical instructions very carefully. You’ll receive detailed information explaining your recovery protocol and how to care for your incisions.
Dr. Carman will do everything possible to minimize your scars. He’ll also talk to you about what you must do, both before and after your surgery, to reduce the appearance of your scars.
Most women heal very well after breast augmentation in Toronto, with very slight scarring to reveal the procedure.
