When we assess the facial appearance of the people around us, the shape of their lips plays a very important role. Thin, tight lips appear unfriendly, intense, or even angry. A more full rounded lip is softer and makes a person look happier and more approachable. There is a more sensual look to a fuller lip, but lips don't have to be extra large to look nice.

I advise my Toronto lip augmentation patients to carefully consider their goals before undergoing this procedure. If you have an overbite, too much volume in the upper lip can look "ducky". The best proportion for most people is to have the upper lip about 2/3 the size of the lower lip. Not everybody has the facial structure to look good with "Angelina Jolie" lips!

In my practice, the softest, most natural results use microfat injection techniques. I take fat from tummy or hips and centrifuge it to concentrate the fat and separate any excess fluid. The pure, undamaged fat is then placed within the lip to give the right degree of change. This procedure is done as day surgery, usually under a general anesthetic. There is a week or two of downtime due to swelling, but the results are very natural and are permanent!

I am often asked by my Toronto lip augmentation patients if microfat injection results are long lasting. There is a lot of conflicting information available which can cause confusion. Older injection methods could be unpredictable and could result in gradual absorption of the injected fat. Fortunately, there have been significant improvements in over the past few years. Modern microfat injection techniques developed by Dr. Sydney Coleman, a New York plastic surgeon, result in stable long term results - basically, a one time procedure! I have been using Dr. Coleman's approach for over 10 years, and have been very impressed with the long term outcome.

Microfat injection enhancement of the lips can be combined with volume correction of other facial areas such as cheeks and nasolabial lines. The results are always soft and smooth with no risk of reaction or allergy.
