3 Tips to Prepare for Liposuction

How do I prepare my body for liposuction? Our Toronto-based practice gets asked this question by a lot of patients who are considering this type of cosmetic surgery. Liposuction is a form of plastic surgery that’s done to reduce stubborn, excess fat from targeted areas of the body. It’s ideal for patients who are close to their goal body weight but have one or more areas that are difficult for them to tone up with diet and exercise on their own. Our body fat distribution is mostly influenced by factors that are outside of our control such as genetics and hormones, so some people may have the tendency to store fat more easily on some areas than others. When we lose weight through traditional methods, we have no control over which areas of the body it is reduced from.

The goal of liposuction is to remove those stubborn fat deposits to reshape body contours and improve overall attractiveness. Some of the main advantages of this procedure are the fact that it can increase the patient’s self-confidence, it involves minimally invasive incisions that leave only very small scars, it can make the treatment areas slimmer, it helps clothing to fit better, and it has a shorter operating time than many other plastic surgery procedures. What you do in the time leading up to the procedure can have a major impact on results. See below for some tips for how to prepare for liposuction.

  • 1. Reach Your Goal Weight

Although there’s no specific weight you will need to be at to have this surgery, you will maximize results if you reach or get close to your target weight several months before the surgery.

  • 2. Avoid Taking Certain Medications and Supplements

Just like for any other type of plastic surgery, it’s recommended that patients avoid taking medications like blood thinners, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other supplements that increase bleeding and bruising.

  • 3. Build Muscle Mass

Liposuction can remove stubborn fat but if you want the underlying muscles to look more defined, it will be up to you to sculpt them on your own. It helps to focus on muscle strengthening exercises several months before liposuction.
