What is a Breast Implant?

A breast implant is a prosthesis used in breast enlargement surgery for Toronto breast augmentation patients. Breast implants are used for cosmetic reasons to create a fuller bust line and firmer breasts, in breast reconstruction, and in male-to-female sex reassignment operations. Breast implants for breast augmentation are manufactured as a flexible pouch which is filled with saline or silicone gel. The breast implant pouch, or membrane, is built from a highly durable elastic substance that helps the implant to feel soft and natural. It mimics the consistency of breast tissues very closely while being extremely rupture resistant.

Smooth Versus Textured Breast Implants

Breast implants come in smooth and textured surfaces. Originally, textured breast implants were designed to reduce the chance of capsular contracture – a condition in which the body forms a capsule of scar tissue around foreign objects such as implants. Some studies have suggested that textured breast implants reduce the incidence of capsular contracture. This claim , however, has never been proven in large scale studies. Overall, smooth implants tend to feel softer and are by far the more popular type of breast implant used by plastic surgeons. Dr. Carman uses a wide range of breast implants at the Cosmetic Surgery Institute for his Toronto breast augmentation patients. Choosing the appropriate implant type is a decision that will be made at the time of your breast augmentation consultation based on your individual assessment.

Breast Implant Shape

Breast implants come in round and contoured shapes. A round, smooth implant is the most common type of implants used. Contoured imparts are designed to have a slightly tear-drop shape with varying degrees of projection. Breast implant types can also be classified in terms of their “profile” or projection. Implants with greater projection are usually appropriate for women with a narrower chest wall. During your Toronto breast augmentation consultation Dr. Carman will consider your preferences and suggest an implant type that best suits your individual case.

Breast Implant Size

Choosing the implant size is one of the most important decisions involving your breast augmentation procedure. In general, maintaining a full but proportionate look is the leading consideration in selecting the right size implants. The goal is to create a look that is appropriate for your individual physique. Generally speaking, breasts should not be augmented more than two cup sizes – though there can be exceptions. The appropriate size of breast implant is decided during the pre-operative breast augmentation consultation. Dr. Carman helps his Toronto breast augmentation patients to make the necessary decisions that lead to an exceptional surgical result.
