Why Does the Skin Around Your Eyes Age So Quickly?

Noticing signs of aging around the eyes? Our Toronto practice recommends treatments such as wrinkle relaxers like BOTOX® and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to rejuvenate this area. The eyes are often referred to as the “windows to the soul,” but unfortunately, they’re also one of the first areas to show signs of aging. This rapid aging can be attributed to a combination of factors that make the skin around the eyes particularly vulnerable to the effects of time, leading many individuals to seek solutions like eyelid surgery or BOTOX® to address these concerns. Skin around the eyes is thinner and more sensitive than skin on other areas of the face. There’s also less fat underneath it.

There are a host of concerns that may show up on this relatively small area of skin. Since the skin on the eye area is particularly thin, it’s much more prone to wrinkling. As skin loses elasticity and collagen while also being affected by the pull of gravity, excess skin may begin to develop on the upper and lower eyelids. Due to sun exposure and repetitive facial movements involved in our expressions such as smiling, squinting, and frowning, wrinkles such as crow’s feet and frown lines may develop around the eyes. Our eyes are constantly in motion since we use them so frequently, so wrinkles are more likely to appear here.

BOTOX® and eyelid surgery are two approaches to addressing common signs of aging on the upper third of the face to give you a more rested, alert, and youthful appearance. BOTOX® is an injectable neuromodulator that contains botulinum toxin type A as its main active ingredient. This is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment that can be completed in just a few minutes. It prevents certain muscles that cause wrinkles from moving for a limited time. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a form of cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance of the eyelids and reduces the look of tired eyes by removing excess skin, tightening muscle, or sometimes removing or repositioning underlying fatty tissue. This surgery can give your eyes a brighter, more vibrant, and refreshed appearance.
