Am I A Good Candidate for a Facelift?

As you get older, it’s normal for the shape of your face to change because of the loss of fat and collagen. Facelifts are surgical treatments that address visible signs of aging on the face such as sagging skin, deepening fold lines, loss of fat, jowls on the cheeks or jaw area, and turkey neck. Minimally invasive treatments like injectables can’t address these types of concerns. A facelift from our Toronto-based practice should always be done for yourself rather than to please someone else and the patient should not be attempting to fit some sort of ideal image. Remember that this procedure won’t prevent the natural aging process or change your basic appearance. Although the forties to sixties is a common age for this surgery, patients who are younger or older than that can also be good candidates. The only way of knowing for sure whether you qualify would be to meet with Dr. Wayne Carman for a consultation but in general, patients who fall within the following categories may be considered ideal candidates for this cosmetic procedure.

  • Patients who are in good physical and mental health and don’t have any serious underlying medical conditions that could impair wound healing or recovery
  • Non-smokers and those who don’t misuse substances
  • Those who maintain a positive outlook and realistic expectations for what the surgery involves
  • Patients who have sagging skin or muscles on the cheeks and jawline areas
  • Patients who have a loose neck contour
  • Those who want to permanently restore the youthful contours of their face and reduce sagging
  • Patients who are showing signs of facial aging but still have skin elasticity
  • Patients who have a good bone structure such as high cheekbones, and a strong chin

A facelift won’t be beneficial for superficial wrinkles, sun damage, skin pigmentation issues, or wrinkles around the upper lip.

What are Crow’s Feet and How Can You Reduce Them?

Unsurprisingly, the skin around the eyes is one of the first areas of the face where the effects of aging become noticeable. BOTOX® Cosmetic from our Toronto practice is usually the recommended solution for these pesky lines around the eyes, but you can also take other measures to prevent the formation of these wrinkles or soften them.

But first, it’s helpful to understand why the skin wrinkles so easily here. This skin is forty percent thinner than other facial skin, so it’s more delicate and prone to environmental damage from sun exposure or pollution. Additionally, there are fewer oil-producing glands around the outer corners of the eyes so the skin is drier, and wrinkles may be more pronounced, even compared to forehead wrinkles. Not to mention there’s plenty of muscle movement in this area from squinting, blinking, laughing, and smiling habitually. Wrinkles such as crow’s feet – which are small lines that spread out from the corners of the eyes – gradually begin to become etched on as we age.

Some people consider crow’s feet to be signs of joy and believe that they add personality to the face. Although these lines are a completely normal aspect of the aging process – and there’s no shame in laughing and smiling a lot – many adults consider them to be a nuisance and look for ways to treat them. Of course, we wouldn’t want to stop having facial expressions entirely, but we can take other steps to preserve strong skin.

Sun protection is a must as it’s a leading cause of skin aging. Wear sunglasses with UV protection as much as possible and apply sunscreen to this area. Using a moisturizer will make these lines less noticeable. Use an eye cream that’s designed specifically for this area and includes collagen boosting ingredients like peptides or moisture-loving ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. BOTOX® relaxes the muscles that contract and cause wrinkles, so it can be highly effective for temporarily reducing crow’s feet.

What Are the Advantages of Microfat Injections for Breast Enhancement?

Traditionally, breast augmentation surgery was the only method of enhancing the bust but now, thanks to advances in technology, fat grafting has become an increasingly popular method of improving this area. Microfat injections from our Toronto-based practice can help you to enhance the size and shape of your breasts as an alternative to traditional breast implants. Not sure whether you would be a good candidate for microfat injections for the breasts? Continue reading for some of the advantages associated with this procedure.

Before delving into the benefits of microfat injections, it’s first necessary to understand why breast augmentation is such a sought-after procedure. For decades, women have searched for ways to enhance their natural curves in various ways. Ever since the time of 1950s Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe, having a voluptuous figure with full breasts has been viewed as a desirable look. Even though trends for breast enhancement have changed throughout the years, breast augmentation has continued to be one of the top-ranking surgeries with one of the highest satisfaction rates. Women who naturally have smaller breasts sometimes feel less feminine or
attractive, while others may want to restore their breasts to their former appearance after they have changed due to weight loss or pregnancy.

  • It’s More Natural Than Implants

While implants do have many of their own benefits, patients seeking out a more natural treatment might prefer microfat injections. They don’t involve saline or silicone implants and since the fat is taken from the patient’s own body, there is a reduced risk of rejection and scarring. The procedure is open to a larger selection of candidates.

  • Enhanced Overall Body Proportions

This procedure is useful for patients who want to reduce excess fat on other body areas while enhancing the breasts at the same time.

  • The Results Are Permanent

Implants are long-lasting devices but there’s always a chance that they’ll need to be replaced, especially as they get older. Microfat injections provide longer-lasting results.

  • Better Customization

Implants offer limited options for shaping while fat grafting allows the surgeon to create a unique and fully personalized look for each patient.

4 Ways to Make Breast Augmentation Recovery Smoother

With swimsuit season several months away, many patients are taking the opportunity to get their desired breast or body procedure early in the year so that they’re ready to show off the changes by the time summer comes around. It’s only natural to want to flaunt your new look as soon as possible, but you need to give your body time to heal. Although Dr. Wayne Carman does everything possible to make the procedure and recovery comfortable for patients and post-op instructions are not complicated, breast augmentation at his Toronto practice is still serious surgery and patients will need to take time to allow their bodies to heal after the treatment. Here are some basic tips to speed up your recovery process and manage any uncomfortable side effects after breast augmentation surgery.

  • 1. Follow Dr. Carman’s Instructions

Dr. Carman will give you advice on how to care for your new breasts. Even if it doesn’t seem like all of the instructions are intuitive, it’s critical that you follow all the guidelines from the surgeon as closely as possible so that your incisions heal well, and you don’t experience any complications.

  • 2. Get Prepared

You won’t want to leave things until the last minute and you’re going to want to rest in a peaceful home after surgery. Get as many of your chores and errands done as early as possible pre-op including household chores, shopping for food, and preparing meals. Fill your pain medication prescriptions before surgery so that you have them ready.

  • 3. Wear the Right Clothes

Since your muscles will feel stiff and sore for a while, keep some loose-fitting clothing made with breathable fabric for after surgery. Avoid pullover tops at first. Button front styles are easier to take on and off for the first week or so.

  • 4. Plan for Support at Home

You’re likely to feel tired, sore and uncomfortable for several days after breast augmentation. Since you won’t be able to drive, lift any heavy objects or do any strenuous activity, it would be helpful if you get assistance from friends or family with household chores and taking care of small children for a few days after surgery.

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: Which Is the Better Option for Me?

Trying to shed fat from the stomach area can often be frustrating, especially if genetics make you prone to carrying more weight around the midsection. Patients often turn to plastic surgery as a way of eliminating fat from this area to re-shape it if other lifestyle changes they’ve made haven’t helped. Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is a procedure that helps to restore a more toned, slimmer, and firmer stomach after pregnancy or major weight fluctuations. Liposuction from my Toronto practice removes fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise. However, while they are both recommended for patients with similar cosmetic goals, there are some major differences between these surgeries. Even though they’re both used to transform the appearance of the abdominal area and can make you feel more confident about your looks, the two procedures aren’t interchangeable.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a more simple and less intensive form of surgery in comparison to tummy tuck surgery with fewer risks and less recovery time. This surgery involves removing fat cells from below the skin using a cannula and it’s ideal for reducing stubborn pockets of excess fat. This treatment is ideal for the patient who is close to their ideal weight except for some deposits of extra fat from targeted areas. As opposed to a tummy tuck, it can be performed on other areas of the body in addition to the stomach, including the surrounding “transition” areas such as the flanks, hips, lower back, and outer thighs.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are usually best suited for patients who have loose skin and/or separated muscles that they want to address in addition to some stubborn fat on the stomach. Pregnancy, aging, previous surgery or weight fluctuations can cause permanently stretched, sagging skin on the stomach that a patient may wish to remove. A tummy tuck can remove the skin and repair stretched sit-up muscles. It’s ideal for patients who don’t intend to have children in the future as pregnancy could undo the results.

The best way of finding out whether you’re a candidate for your procedure of interest is to have a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon.
